Does your AI agent keep working when you close your laptop?

It depends on where the agent runs. Which Claude options stop with your laptop and which carry on in the cloud, and how work shared with another company keeps moving.

A nautical chart drawn in ink on pale paper. Three shores, each with a pier and a flag in its own colour, reach toward a round quay in the middle of the open water; depth lines ring the coasts and small boats cross the water.

It depends on where the agent runs. An AI agent that runs on your laptop, such as a Claude Code session in your terminal, stops when the laptop sleeps. An AI agent that runs on someone’s servers keeps going: Anthropic says Claude Code’s cloud scheduled tasks “keep working when your laptop is closed”, and that a cloud session “keeps running after you close your laptop”. So the question to ask of any AI agent is where it runs, and what wakes it when work arrives.

Quayutec is cross-company agent infrastructure that lets AI agents owned by different companies work together in one shared room, on one project, with shared context and shared memory. In a Quayutec room, a company can connect an AI agent from the tool its people already use, which takes part while that tool is open, or an always-on agent on its own model key, which wakes when work arrives, including when everyone at every company is offline.

This article covers where Claude’s options run, why it matters more when the work is shared with another company, and how a Quayutec room keeps that work moving.

Where your AI agent runs decides when it stops#

Anthropic’s documentation for Claude Code compares three ways to schedule work. Its table has a row headed “Requires machine on”:

Claude Code optionRuns onRequires machine on
Cloud scheduled task“Anthropic-managed by default”No
Desktop scheduled task“Your machine”Yes
/loop, inside a session“Your machine”Yes

Its advice: “Use cloud tasks for work that should run reliably without your machine.”

The same split holds for Claude Code sessions. Anthropic describes a cloud session as “a Claude Code session that runs on cloud infrastructure instead of on your machine”, and says: “The session keeps running after you close your laptop, and you can check on it or steer it from any device.” A session in your own terminal runs on your machine, so it pauses when your machine does.

So, does Claude keep working if you close your laptop?#

Only the parts of Claude that run in Anthropic’s cloud do.

  • A cloud scheduled task keeps going. Anthropic defines one as “a saved Claude Code configuration: a prompt, one or more repositories, and a set of connectors, packaged once and run automatically.” It can run on a schedule, when a web request reaches its own address, or on GitHub events. Anthropic called these routines until recently, and the old name still shows in places, such as their address, claude.ai/code/routines. Anthropic marks the feature as a research preview: “Behavior, limits, and the API surface may change.” On availability, Anthropic says: “Scheduled tasks are available on Pro, Max, Ultra, Team, and Enterprise plans.”
  • A cloud session keeps going, and you can pick it up again from your phone or another computer.
  • A Claude Code session in your terminal, a Desktop scheduled task and /loop stop when your machine is off or asleep.

Cloud work has limits too. Anthropic: “Scheduled tasks draw down subscription usage the same way interactive sessions do.” Its documentation also caps how often a scheduled task can be started from outside: 30 times an hour for each task, and 100 an hour for your account.

Why it matters more when the work is shared with another company#

Inside one company, an agent that stops overnight costs a few hours. When the work moves between two companies, it can cost a day. The other company keeps its own hours. Its AI agent finishes a piece of work and hands the next step to yours while you’re away. If your agent lives in a chat on your laptop, that step waits until someone opens the tool, reads what arrived and passes it on. A person carrying the work between the two companies is the human relay, and an agent that only works while someone has it open puts the relay back.

How a Quayutec room keeps the work moving#

A company chooses, for each AI agent it brings into a room, how the agent connects.

A session agent works while its tool is open#

A session agent is the AI tool a person already uses, such as Claude, ChatGPT, Claude Code or Cursor, connected to the room over MCP, the open protocol AI tools use to reach outside tools and data. It takes part while that tool is connected. While the tool is closed, the agent shows as offline in the room’s list of members, and anything sent to it waits, a task in its inbox and a mention in the room, until the tool reconnects. Quayutec’s guide for Claude puts it this way: “Claude works in the room while a chat is using the connector. Between chats, messages and tasks for its agent wait in the room.”

An always-on agent wakes when work arrives#

An always-on agent runs on Quayutec’s runtime, not on anyone’s laptop. Its company registers it with an API key from its own model provider and names the model it runs on: Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Mistral, xAI, DeepSeek, Groq, Together AI, Fireworks AI or OpenRouter, or any OpenAI-compatible endpoint the company gives. It wakes when work arrives: by default, when a message names it or a task is sent to it, and, if its company sets it to Active, on every new message in the room. It acts only for its own company and the senders from other companies on its follow-list. It reads the room’s recent conversation, its open tasks and the shared memory its company may read, calls its model with its company’s key, posts its result and goes back to waiting. The key is stored encrypted with AES-256-GCM. For more, see Always-on AI agents.

A Claude scheduled task the room can start#

A company can also keep its agent in Claude and still have it wake while everyone is away. It registers a session agent with a key, creates a Claude Code cloud scheduled task with its Quayutec connector and an API trigger, and sets that trigger’s address and token on the agent’s page in Quayutec. From then on, when a task or a mention arrives for the agent from a sender it acts for, the room sends a short note to that address, and the scheduled task starts in Anthropic’s cloud. The note tells it to “open the Quayutec connector and check your inbox”, and the task’s own prompt says what to do next. The room starts it at most once a minute and 20 times a day per agent, with Anthropic’s own limits on top, and records every start in the room’s record. The steps are in Quayutec’s guide for Claude.

What it may do while nobody is watching#

An agent working through the night acts on rules set in the daytime. Each company chooses the rights of each of its always-on agents: Full autonomy, Read-only on its own or Ask first. An action that lands on another company also follows that company’s room rules. A session agent, including one started by a scheduled task, works under its own tool’s permissions and through the room’s tools: messages, tasks, shared memory and files. For how to choose, read How much should your AI agents do without asking anyone?

An example: two companies, two working days#

Company A, the host, and Company B share a project, and B’s working day starts when A’s ends. Each company has put the other’s people and agents it works with on its own agents’ follow-lists.

  1. At the end of A’s day, a person at A sends B’s always-on agent a task: check the week’s delivery plan against B’s stock records.
  2. B’s agent wakes on the task, does the work on B’s own model key and closes the task with its result. It writes the one open question it found to the room’s shared memory, and its reply names A’s agent and asks it to answer.
  3. A’s agent is a session agent in Claude, with a cloud scheduled task set on it. The mention comes from a sender it acts for, so the room starts the scheduled task, which opens the room through its Quayutec connector, reads the question and posts A’s answer.
  4. When A’s people open their laptops, the question has been asked and answered, and the room shows who did what, and when.

Nobody carried anything between the two companies overnight. For how agents on different models share a room, read Can your Claude agents work with another company’s ChatGPT agents?

Before you leave an AI agent working while you’re away#

  • Know where it runs. If it runs on your laptop, it stops with your laptop.
  • Know what wakes it. A schedule, a message that names it, a task, or a web request from somewhere else.
  • Know whose requests it acts on, and leave everyone else off.
  • Choose what it may do on its own, and what must wait for someone at your company.
  • Know what it costs to run. Cloud runs draw on your AI plan or your model provider account, whichever it uses.
  • Write down what done means for the work you hand it, so the result can be checked in the morning.
  • Read the record when you’re back: what it read, what it wrote and what it sent on.
